Being “gifted” as an adult can often feel confusing, isolating, and sometimes even shameful.
I wasn’t taught what it meant to be gifted as a child. I was asked to complete some assessments and then told that I’d be in a special classroom for an hour each week to work on special projects. The general assumption was that this meant that I was smart. I was the subject of some teasing for it, but otherwise it was just a nice break from the monotony of the classroom.
I’ve learned more about what it means to be gifted now, and a lot of it surprised me.
Some characteristics of giftedness you might recognize:
Asynchronous Development: you developed more quickly in some domains than others, meaning you may have excelled academically but struggled to connect socially, etc. This can lead to grief around missed experiences in later life.
Rich Inner Life: you have a lot of internal activity, which can be a source of creativity, relief, and complexity as well as critique, anxiety, and over-thinking. You may feel deeply understood because you haven’t yet figured out how to express yourself.
Emotional Intensity: You feel things deeply and may struggle to understand why or how to process these emotions. This can result in prolonged states of fight-or-flight or emotional suppression.
Perfectionism: you have high standards for yourself and others, which may translate to a tough internal critic and feeling blocked or frozen when you’re not immediately good at something. This can cut you off from starting new activities or hobbies and finding meaningful work.
Burnout: if you learned that giftedness meant you should be a high-achiever, you might be feeling the strain of over-performing and under-resting. Your needs are unique and needed to be treated as such. It’s ok to slow down and take some time to figure out what is really important to you.
HOW I CAN HELP
Therapy for giftedness can help you understand your gifts, how they’ve impacted you, and how to relate better to others.
Therapy can help you understand yourself and your particular giftedness better. You can explore how your story of giftedness unfolded for you and how it impacted your development. This will give you space to grieve the things you did not or could not experience at the time. It will also give you a chance to re-orient and develop in places you may have previously feel blocked.
Therapy can help you bridge the gap between what you experience internally and what you express outwardly. Finding coherent ways to communicate your thoughts and feelings with others will allow you to be better understood and more deeply connected.
